Baker, et all explained that in groups, there are some conditions that make many differences and need to discuss, named conflict. Conflict is a process which includes differently on the perception, opposition, and interaction between the group’s members. Process conflict is based on the disagreement, while task conflict is using the opposite approaches.


There are five stages in the process of conflict. In groups, it may personal variables such as communication, resources, structure and other differences that lead the conflict. These are the first stage of the conflict. The second stage is cognition and personalization which make reality of the conflict. This second stage influences the next stage that is intention. The fourth stage is conflict behavior with outcomes as the last stage. To limit the conflict, the groups have to limit the intensity, the scope and using problem solving technique. 


The other way to make a decision is negotiation. This way can be divided into two approaches: distribution that is fixed with one solution and integrative that accepted many possible solutions. As conflict process, negotiation is also having five steps: planning, identify the rules, clarifying the importance and discussion to make agreement. The last step is implementing the decision.


Nursing is profession which works in team. In the team work, they may face many problems. The decision making process to solve the problems in team need skills which are necessary to built in the nursing students. In the school, teacher can improve the student’s skills using discussion method, such as problem base learning method. This method can realize the students how to take the advantages of the conflict between them or how to make decisions using negotiation approach. Without these skills, in the future, student can not realize that there are so many differences in nursing care. The nursing care can not implement if there is not decision which is the best intervention for the patient.

Communicating strategically is communication which is used to realize the purposes (Baker, et all). For this reason, communication is not about how to talk but it is more about the listening skills. The speaking strategies are in the next place which is needed to present the ideas and influence others. However, if these ideas that want to present are the new and complex things, it is important to identify the most effective learning style, such as using diagrams, cartoons, and exercises.


Another part of communicating strategically is asking someone else to give their perceptions from their side. To ask, good question are required and this is the most important thing in communicating strategically. To maintain good situation in group’s communication, it needs to be assertive, adaptable and responsive. Group’s members also have to know each other and avoid the negative provocation.


Communication in nursing have two majors; communication to the clients and to the partner. Both these majors need the same listening skills as the most important way to get the purposes. When the nurses are caring the clients, they have to listen to the clients first so they can make plans. On the other hand, nurses also have a partner, not only the other nurses but also the other health professions. As a team, nurses must have skills in communication, both listening and speaking skills, to discus the client’s problems.


Most nursing students know about communication. But, it is focus on therapeutic communication which is used for communicating to the clients. On the explanations above, it is clear that the students also have to know about communicating strategically in group. This strategy can be improved in the group discussions. If the lectures are only in classical methods, students also only learn how to listen or when there are questions by the lecturers, they will let other students to answer it. Even though in group discussions there are some students who are passive members, but in this method, they have an experience how the groups work to solve the problems using strategy in communication.
